Unincorporated areas require a burn permit from the Fire Warden. These can be obtained by calling the Fire Warden

Open Burn Criteria

Summit County ordinance requires residents to contact Summit County Dispatch at (435) 336-3600 option 1 before conducting any open burns between April 1 and November 30. However, fire personnel ask that you contact Dispatch for any burns year round to help prevent unnecessary fire department responses. This does not include campfires in improved fire pits or cook-type fires.

BURN PERMITS

The State of Utah requires residents to obtain burn permits during certain periods of the year and based upon the location of the burn. Permits are free of charge and are good for a three-day period. The following provides an overview of those requirements:

INCORPORATED AREAS
Opens burns in incorporated areas are limited to two seasonal windows and on approved burning days. The first window is from March 31 through May 30. The second window is from September 15 through October 30. Burn permits are obtained through the State’s Division of Air Quality (DAQ). Other restrictions may be applied by your local municipality. Please check with the appropriate municipal website for information specific to your area.

 UNINCORPORATED AREAS

Opens burns in unincorporated areas require a permit on approved burning days from June 1 through October 31. Burn permits are regulated through the State Forester and can be obtained by contacting the County Fire Warden at (435) 640-2075. The Fire Warden is available for permits Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Please plan ahead to insure permits are issued well before your planned burn. Burn permits for weekend burns should be requested by the preceding Wednesday.
