Solid Waste

The Summit County Solid Waste Division manages the waste from its inception to its final disposal. This includes collection transport, treatment, and disposal of waste together with monitoring and regulation. Waste Management is intended to reduce adverse effects of waste on health and on the environment. The Solid Waste Division works closely with the Utah State Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste.

CHANGE IN HOW GARBAGE COLLECTION FEES ARE COLLECTED: Summit County residents have historically paid for household garbage exclusively through their property taxes. For 2016 and beyond, the County Council has determined the cost for waste collection should transition to a fee basis at $3.00 a month per residential equivalent or $36 billed once annually. Summit County has contracted with Republic Services to be the collection point for household garbage fees.

Residential Curbside Collection

Curbside Collection is the most common from of disposal, it encompasses specialized trucks that collect the waste at regular intervals. Household waste is then transferred to the Three Mile Canyon Landfill.

County issued bins reduce solid waste and encourage recycling. The recycling is collected and is taken to the Rocky Mountain Recycling facility where it is sorted. This recycling process is known as single stream recycling.

Commercial Collection

Commercial and Industrial Waste is not included in the Summit County Contract and has to be disposed of at the owner's expense to the Henefer Landfill.

Commercial Hazardous Waste cannot be disposed of at either of the county landfills.

Disposal of waste in the landfill involves burying the waste. A well maintained landfill can be a hygienic and an inexpensive way of disposing materials.

Household Hazardous Waste is collected at the Three Mile Canyon Landfill to protect groundwater and surface water. When Household Hazardous Waste is disposed of improperly it can migrate into the ground water.

The Three Mile Canyon Landfill is a Solid Waste Landfill (MSW), this landfill collects household garbage and is regulated by the Summit County Solid Waste Division, and the Utah State Divisions of Solid and Hazardous Waste.

The Henefer Landfill is a Construction and Demolition Landfill and is used for debris generated during construction, renovations, demolition of buildings. The type of waste excepted: wood, asphalt, metals, bricks, glass, plastics, green waste, and building components.
