Building Inspector

Summit County is currently recruiting for a full time Building Inspector.
Performs a variety of full performance, para-professional and technical duties as needed to assure compliance with county, state and/or federal building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical codes and ordinances. Performs inspections on residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

Minimum Qualifications

Building Inspector IV - Minimum Qualification: Graduation from high school plus, five (5) years of specialized training in building methods and practices related to commercial, industrial and residential structures provided though technical college, professional workshops or university studies; and eight (8) years of responsible experience performing above or related duties; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in the construction industry at the journeyman level can be traded year for year with education and training.

May be filled by a Building Inspector III - Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school plus, five (5) years of specialized training in building methods and practices related to commercial, industrial and residential structures provided through technical college, professional workshops or university studies; five (5) years of responsible experience preforming above or related duties or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in the construction industry at the journeyman level can be traded year for year with education and training. Must possess a valid Utah Driver’s License. Also, must be ICC or other Utah State approved or recognized four-way residential and commercial (building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical) inspector, and must possess a state license for combination inspector.

May be filled by a Building Inspector II. Minimum Qualification: Graduation from high school plus, two (2) years of specialized training in commercial, residential or industrial building methods and practices provided through technical college, professional workshops or university studies; and four (4) years of responsible experience performing above or related duties or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in the construction industry at the journeyman level can be traded year for year with education and training. Must possess a valid Utah Driver’s license. Also, must be ICC or other Utah State approved or recognized Inspector for two areas of residential or commercial specialization (building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical), and must possess a state license for a combination or limited inspector.

May be filled by a Building Inspector I. Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school plus, two (2) years of specialized training in commercial, residential or industrial building methods and practices provided through technical college, professional workshops or university studies and two (2) years of responsible experience performing above or related duties or in being directly involved in the building trades; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in the construction industry at the journey level can be traded year for year with education and training. Must possess a valid Utah Driver’s license. Must be a ICC, or other Utah State approved or recognized inspector for one are of residential or commercial specialization (building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical) and must possess a state license for a combination or limited inspector.


Salary Range:

  • Building Inspector IV: $27.34 - $38.28/hr  
  • Building Inspector III: $25.79 - $36.12/hr  
  • Building Inspector II: $22.95 - $32.15/hr  
  • Building Inspector I: $19.28 - $27.00/hr
